My Internship in Thailand

外国语学院 18英语8班 潘健虹

The time fixed on November 29, 2019. With great anxiety and excitement, I set foot on the flight to Bangkok, Thailand, which was unknown for me.

Running all the way was tiring, but it did not wear out my enthusiasm for teaching English abroad. Moreover, the teachers and students there and the villagers around us were all smiling, which was a polite and unspoken expression of “Welcome to Thailand”. Soon, with the kind hearts of local people, I got used to the new environment.

Here are some special days I particularly prefer to note. On January 16th, it was the Teacher’s Day in Thailand, which gave us a good chance to meet more excellent teachers, making it available for us to exchange our various experiences together. And on January 24th, the Children’s Day in Thailand, we Chinese teachers, were dressed in school uniforms, celebrating it with all the students.

Apart from the things mentioned above, I experienced a very different Buddhist culture there as well. The students went to the temple to chant Buddhist ures and joined the temple party every Wednesday. To my great amazement, the breakfast there that every household provided for monks was a little and different kinds of food. Thus, after the prayers we ate breakfast together, and every time we could taste all sorts of local dishes from households. Outside the temple, there was another interesting activity called a hilarious celebration that will be held in the market where we usually bought the breakfast and some snacks.

Through many specific examples, I felt Thai people attach great importance to the ceremony of festivals. Everything had a sense of ritual and cultural belonging. Take the funeral as an example, they invited everyone to participate in it as usual and even took photos together as a souvenir. Anyway, every photo shot there was a real-life experience, which was deeply felt by me. Moreover, I could have a sense of belonging to Thai’s family when we went to Nakhon Sawan(泰国那空沙旺府) and had a Thai hot pot with other Thai teachers as they treated us as relatives, which also made me feel a kind of happy cohesion of the whole village.

In addition, the teaching mode of schools in Thailand is worth learning. The most impressive experience was the School Camping held by our school—Anubanbernareughuaiguai School(阿努本布纳雷格瓦伊学校). On that day, all the teachers and students were required to wear the school uniforms, and there was a special worship opening ceremony held with flag raising. Early in the morning, the students prepared their boiler, bowl, gourd ladle, dish, and other daily necessities together respectively for the part that they were responsible for. Later, the students were ready to drill a tiger in the shape of a straw hole. We cheered up while doing some tricks on them. Some teachers set up a drum, some carried a bass, some picked up the iron triangle, and some sang a song, just like a whole band there, which fully showed the unique charm of Thai teachers by singing and dancing!
